Slack is one of the foremost instant-messaging platforms that's one of the best alternatives to Skype. A lot of users prefer to utilize Slack due to its superior text formatting and app integration options.
Slack also enables you to set up handy reminders for yourself, a whole channel, or a channel member. Follow the guidelines below to create and delete reminders in Slack.
How can I create and delete Slack reminders?
1. Creating Reminders
- To set up a reminder, select your (you) direct message space on the left of the Slack window.
- Input this command into Slack: /remind. Then you'll see the remind command template shown directly below.
- To set up a reminder more specifically for yourself, you'll need to expand the command to: /remind me.
- Then add the [what] part of the command. For example, if the reminder was to send a letter, the command would be: /remind me to send the letter.
- The end of the remind command needs to include a time in at least the form of a date. For example, the command could be something like: /remind me to send the letter on 2/3/2020.
- Press the Return key after entering the full command. Thereafter, Slackbot will say that it will provide the reminder on the specified date at a default 9 A.M time if you didn't enter a specific clock time.
- If you need to set up a reminder for another Slack member, enter the command as follows: /remind @member. Replace 'member' in that command with the required name, and then add the [what] and [when] parts to the reminder.
- To set up a reminder for a whole Slack channel, enter the command like this: /remind #channel. Replace 'channel' with the actual channel name, and then expand the reminder as required.
- If you need a weekly recurring reminder, enter the command something like this: /remind me to check emails every Tuesday. So, enter 'every' before the specified time to instruct Slackbot to remind you on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
2. Deleting Reminders
- To erase reminders, enter '/ remind list' in Slack's text box as shown directly below.
- Then press the Enter key. Thereafter, Slack will show you an upcoming reminder list as in the snapshot below.
- Click Delete to erase the reminder.
So, setting up and deleting reminders in Slack is straightforward. Note that Slack doesn't provide an edit option for reminders. Thus, you'll need to delete reminders and re-enter the full commands again to change them if needed.

Many people struggle to keep up with their daily to-do list simply because they don't have a reminder in place to keep them in check and give them a good visual of what needs to be done. When one isn't organized, their whole day could be messed up. They can find it difficult to accomplish what they are meant to do for the day or for a particular period.
It's normal for us as humans to forget one thing or the other and most times, some things will escape your mind, especially on a particularly busy day. This is a problem many people are struggling with, but setting up a reminder system can go a long way in fixing the problem! Additionally, it's quite unfortunate that many people do in fact set reminders but they don't follow them.
It's just not enough for you to set reminders, and following these reminders and utilizing them to their fullest is the most important thing. When you set daily reminders, it will help you increase your productivity in your workplace.
The Slack App
Slack is communication app that allows staff members to send or share files like documents, photos, videos, PDFs, and others with each other. The individual chats and group messages on Slack are referred to as channels. Channels make it easy for staff to work on projects together and thus helps to reduce the turnaround time for the completion of various tasks.
Sometimes, you might forget to work on a document that has been sent to you. In this situation, it would be extremely helpful to have a reminder set to avoid disappointing your team members. You can do this using the Slack App on the web, iPhone, or iPad. So, how do you set up a reminder on Slack Bot?
Slack Bot Reminders
After you have created and signed in into your Slack account, you will then have access to the 'slackbot'. You can find this in your workspace area, and it's function is to teach you know how to use the Slack App to its fullest, including knowing how to set reminders. Slack has the ability to continually remind you of your various events and responsibilities throughout the day. This means that you can set as many reminders as you want per day, with no limit.
How to Set a Personal Reminder
To set a personal reminder, you have to open the sidebar and then click on your name under direct messages. A new window will open, and then you should click on the "JOT SOMETHING DOWN" area located at the bottom of the window. You should then type your reminder using this format:
/remind me / (what) (when).
E.g if you want to remind yourself to sign a document at 9:55 am, you will type it like this:
/remind me ''sign a document'' at 9:55 am.
After typing your reminder in this format, click on the send button and your reminder is now set. You can also send a reminder for another user by writing the reminder in this format:
/remind @username / (what) (when).
After your reminder has been set, Slack Bot will ask you to either view or delete your reminder. You can then click view and after that, click complete. At the chosen day and time, you will be reminded about what you are supposed to do according to the set reminder.
Now you know how to successfully set reminders using Slack Bot! You can set as many reminders as you want using this handy little tool. Unlike co-workers who struggle daily to keep up with their schedule, it can help you increase your efficiency in your workplace.
Slack gives you a ton of options for setting up reminders. For example, you can set reminders to do things at specific times by using the command "/remind" followed by an action and time (like 9:00 a.m. or Mondays, if you want it to be a recurring reminder), within your personal direct message area.
You would then get a message about that action at the time you set. As a variation, you can also use that format and instead tag someone else or a channel so that they get the message on time.

- Tips & tricks Set up Slack to go on vacation
The only thing better than being productive and efficient at work is rewarding yourself with a break! When it's time to get away and recharge, you can set up Slack so that you can take a vacation.
Set up Slack for time away
- Set a custom status while you're away.
- Manage your notifications so your vacation goes undisturbed.
- Keep yourself and others organized with reminders.
- Catch up with personal and channel highlights when you get back.
Let everyone know you're taking time off and when you'll be back by setting a custom status. Update the emoji to give more detail on your plans and set expectations for your response time. You can add an airplane for when you're in flight, and switch to a palm tree when you've reached the beach. 🏝
Another way to let your team know you won't be responding right away is to set your availability to away. You'll be listed as inactive in Slack — even if you open the app for a quick peek. (But no peeking — go relax!)
Here's the beauty of going on vacation when your team uses Slack: crucial conversations are logged in channels — not hidden away in email inboxes. Remember to upload and share resources with your workspace so that they'll have access to them while you're away.
As work carries on without you, it's helpful to set up Do Not Disturb hours so you won't receive notifications of channel activity while you're away. The snooze icon next to your name will let coworkers know you've silenced your notifications.
Before you leave, set reminders for tasks and projects you'll need to do when you return. You can even ask Slack to remind you later about a particular message or conversation to follow up on.
If there are channels that rely on your input or approval to get work done, consider scheduling a daily reminder for the channel that you'll be away.
Tip: Ask other members of your workspace to set reminders for you if anything comes up while you're gone.
Finally figure out how to wrap up that report? Or did you see something in your travels that sparked a project idea? Though we recommend unplugging completely, you can always send notes to yourself to keep track of any work-related thoughts that occur to you while you're out and about.
Tip: Once you're back and settled, upload photos from your trip to your workspace's #vacation-photos social channel! 📸

Slack can be chaotic. There's a good chance you often need to remember and take action on messages in channels, replies to threads, and direct messages. Take advantage of these Slack features to avoid forgetting those important messages.
This is particularly convenient when you want to shift between devices—for example, if you read an important message on your phone and want to take action when you get to a computer. It's also useful when you want to set aside a message for now and revisit it in the future.
Use Slack's Reminders
When you want to get reminded about a message later, set a reminder. To do this, hover over a message in Slack with your mouse, click the "More Actions" button that looks like three dots, point to "Remind me about this," and select a time.
In the Slack app for iPhone, iPad, and Android, long-press a message and tap "Remind Me" in the list to select a time.
For example, if you want to revisit a message tomorrow morning, select "Tomorrow." If you know you'll have time to deal with it in an hour, select "In 1 Hour."
When the time arrives, Slackbot will send you a direct message with your reminder and you'll get a notification. If you don't want to deal with the reminder immediately, you can use the "Snooze" box to reschedule your reminder for later. Slackbot will send you another direct message with the reminder at your scheduled time.
Save Important Messages
Want to review important messages later? Rather than setting reminders, "save" them. To do this, hover over a message in Slack and click the "Save" icon. In the Slack mobile app, long-press a message and tap "Save."
To access saved items later, click "Saved items" near the top-left corner of the Slack window. You may have to click "Show more" to see it. In the Slack mobile app, tap the "You" icon at the bottom of the screen and then tap "Saved items."
Saved items are easier to review later than items you've set reminders for. However, Slack won't automatically remind you about your saved items—you'll have to remember to manually review them.
Check Your Mentions and Threads
To avoid losing track of important messages you were mentioned in, check your mentions in Slack. Click "Mentions and reactions" at the top-left corner of the Slack window to see messages you were mentioned in. If you missed any of these, you can review them.
In the Slack mobile app, tap "Mentions" at the bottom of the screen to view them.
Slack also shows messages other people reacted to—for example, If you sent a message to someone and they responded with a thumbs-up emoji, you'll see that here.
If you use threads in Slack, you can also quickly check for new messages in your threads by clicking "Threads" at the top-left corner of the Slack window.
In the Slack mobile app, tap the "Home" icon at the bottom of the screen and tap "Threads" near the top of the screen.
Send Messages to Apps Like Trello
You can set up shortcuts in Slack to easily send messages to other applications. For example, you could send a message to a project-management tool like Trello or create a calendar event based on a message in an app like Google Calendar.
In Slack, hover over a message, click the "More Options" (…) button, and look for shortcut actions at the bottom of the list. Click "Get More Shortcuts" to install shortcuts for your favorite applications.
In the mobile app, long-press a message and scroll to the bottom of your list to see shortcuts you've installed.
Use Slack's Reacji Channeler
Slack created an official tool called Reacji Channeler that makes it easy to send messages to another channel. When you add an emoji reaction (a "reacji") to a message, Slack can automatically send messages with specific emoji to specific channels.
For example, let's say you often need to send emails based on certain messages. You could set up Slack so that, when you react with the 📧 emoji, Slack will send the message to a "#to-email" channel. You can then review those messages later.
You can set up multiple emoji to send messages to different channels. Maybe you just want to keep track of positive feedback, funny jokes, or good ideas and gather them in one place to share them with your team.
Want something a bit different? You can even add your own custom emoji to Slack and use those!
Slack has become an excellent tool for marketers, programmers, graphic designers and professionals in other work niches. So you already signed up on Slack and have your channel or are a channel member.В This article is aimed at helping you learn the ropes of setting, editing and deleting recurring reminders in Slack.В
Now to the nitty-gritty of setting, editing and deleting reminders in Slack;
While human nature may cause forgetfulness or perhaps you have a lot on your plate, reminders in Slack are the best way to help teams and other individuals remember personal appointments, work tasks, birthdays and others thereby affording teams and their members to do the needful at exactly when needed.
Recurring reminders, on the other hand, are Slack reminders that are already set with a date and time and are scheduled to appear on several occasions reminding a team or team members of a task, event or activity to be done.В
You do not need to be Steve Jobs to remind or set a reminder in Slack. Although setting a reminder must follow a correct order of commands, it is, in fact, simple.В
Once the three-part commands are added, Slack reminds a channel owner or member with a reminder text of the activity as was set and at the appointed time.В
You can add a reminder in Slack using several methods. The first method is to use the Slash command. To do this, take the following steps:
- Log in to Slack and in the field for comment, type the command “/remind.” Automatically, you will get a pop-up message on your screen detailing how the command is to be structured.
A reminder may be for yourself or another member of the channel. Ensure you start the name of a channel member the reminder is for with the @ symbol and the name of the channel with #. If the reminder is meant for you, type “me” without the @ symbol.В
- Next, follow the /remind command with whom you are setting the reminder for. The date, time the reminder is to come up. As an example, if you want to remind yourself of a team member’s birthday on the 30th of October 2020 at 10 am, your command should look like this:
/remind me “Britan’s Birthday Reminder” 10/30/2020 10:00 am. В
Interestingly, you can use any time format you deem fit.
- Next, hit Enter and a message approving your reminder showing the specified date and time for the reminder will appear.В
On your screen, you can find buttons to View already set reminders and Delete a reminder you no longer have interest in. Once you have active reminders, an icon notifies you of this. You may also Mark as Complete, Delete or Snooze a reminder.
The fun doesn’t stop here. You can also set your reminder such that it reoccurs using recurring terms like “every weekday” etc. These types of recurring reminders can be initiated by including some basic comments like “weekly”, “monthly”, or even “every Monday.”В
For example: If you want a weekly recurring reminder, start by entering the command like this: /remind me to check emails every Tuesday. So, enter вЂevery’ just before the specified time to instruct Slack to give you a reminder on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
The second method is to create a reminder from the Shortcut Menu.В To do this:
- Access the shortcut menu on your channel, and locate the lighting icon on your screen. From here, choose the three vertical dots next to a message to create a reminder for that message.
- Next, type /remind and then create a custom reminder. Be sure to fill the time and date fields before you hit “create a reminder” because Slackbot will preset reminders at 9 am on the date you have selected.В
Following this method also allows you to send such reminders to other members of the channel.
Lastly, you can set reminders from Messages. Doing this is relatively easy. Follow the steps below if you are using a desktop version of Slack:В
- Click the three vertical dots at the top of your screen and select “Remind me about this.”
- Once you click the dots, the field to input your preferred time for the reminder pops up. Fill up the fields accordingly by selecting the right date and time for the reminder. Interestingly, you can make use of this method using the Slack desktop app or the Android and iOS versions.
If you use the mobile versions, make use of the following steps:
- Select a message of your choice
- Tap and hold the selected message and tap “Remind Me”.
- Next select when you wish to be reminded or choose “Custom” to set your reminder.
Easy right? Let us now consider how to edit a reminder in Slack. How to set a Recurring reminder in Slack
Unlike setting recurring reminders, editing recurring reminders takes some additional steps mainly because they can’t be edited directly without having to delete such reminders first. Even then, the steps, as outlined below, are straightforward.В
- First, select your slack channel by choosing your name and typing the /remind list command. What appears next is a list of all set reminders.
- Once you have recalled your active reminders, select the one you need to edit by viewing it and taking a note of the changes to be made. Remember, you can not edit your reminders directly in Slack. After noting the activity, date and time, choose Delete to remove a reminder.
- Next, create a new reminder with the new details and the same command as given above. Doing this will replace the last task that was removed hence editing your recurring reminder.В
Not as challenging as you imagined, right?В В
Creating, editing and deleting a reminder on Slack can be done effortlessly following the steps outlined in this article. While creating reminders for team members in your organization, remember to consider their region and time difference, so the purpose of the remainder will not be missed.
Basic Slack reminders are a useful way to manage the simple tasks or habits for your team in Slack; however, for advanced processes like integrating third-party apps like Asana or Jira, and reminders to multiple users and channels at the same time, AhoyTeam is here to help you with.
