How To Draw Splatoon Weapons

A lot of people wanted to learn how to draw in the splatoon style, (Which is pretty easy for me), so I decided I would make a guide!

==Where  to start==

Of course I'm no proffesional, since I'm still doing my second attempt, but I suggest you reference official art first. Best if it is a full body and has another item/weapon for practice in both skills. I suggest the official art for Marie's Splatoon 2 outfit or anything close.  DON'T REFERENCE THE SPLATFEST ART WITH OFF THE HOOK OR THE SQUID SISTERS. THOSE ARE DIFFERENT STYLES. Although they seem close to the official art, it is not the same style as it.

Images such as these will work best! ^^

Most of the people on this wiki use drawing programs that allow you to import your own brushes, so I suggest using these brushes: https://www.deviantart.com/tamarinfrog/art/Splatoon-Brush-541152954

If you have a drawing program that doesnt allow you to import brushes such as Ibis Paint, I suggest making your own one! (In Ibis Paint, you can only play with the default brushes, but you can still make some!) I suggest getting a shape with a lot of squares and jitter on it for the main brush. For shading, I suggest finding a brush that has spots that it doesn't fully erase. The shape will work best if it is a triangle, but you can always shave the brush stroke to be as close to a triangle you can make!

Like I said before, I'm no professional, so this won't be the best tutorial. (I forgot to take multiple pictures QwQ I'm sorry if it goes to fast because my lack of photos-)

I suggest you first sketch the body of the drawing out. This drawing was a practice test with the Marie ref. I suggest going with a bolder color for the hands in case you need any help with hands.

The next step it to sketch it again, going over it, but in the end use the 1st sketch's hands since those are torture to draw. If you skip this step you might not have a 100% official looking drawing, but that's only based on how I view it. I ended up changing the final pose, which is a thing I suggest you do, incase you want to experiment on what works and what doesn't.

I don't suggest doing the base colors first, because it's much easier to see when you render it first thing! It'll end up with better results and you don't have to hurt your eyes of go in to see a hole you thought you filled in. (It's fine if there are holes in the drawing, because most the official art has holes in it too, so if you miss a spot, that's okay!)

Now, you can finish the coloring, since the rendering and shading is almost exact in every part of the body! Just don't go all in with the rendering or it will end up wonky.

  • I suggest you change the opacity when shading from time to time, so it doesn't look plain
  • Don't use the same color for every part of the tentacle, outfit or anything that has the look of feeling stacked. Any thing that is on top of any stacked item is usually brighter, and everything on the bottom is always darker.
  • Abuse the alpha lock and clipping mask as much as you possibly can. It'll help a lot with coloring if you can't do it properly.
  • Don't re-use minor colors more than 2 times. Minor colors as in the colors that only appear a little bit, or are a tiny detail. The only way you can make it work is changing the opacity, but put that on top of an existing color.

Hopefully that made since! The finished drawing was the Marie drawing in the descussions page. This was supposed to come out 2 weeks ago, but I never ended up finishing the Callie, which was also the same reason there is a little bit of pictures .-. Hopefully all this works though!
